There's a time and a place for cool and cutting edge, and December in the BVI's is not it. Here, we want something a little laid-back, a bit mussed up, with sand between our toes and salt in our hair. Peter Island is just that. The resort has been luring smart families since the Sixties and a cracking makeover has added a shiny new harbour for visiting yachties, updated suites and brought in a fancy new executive chef, Todd Howard. The smiley staff are all still there, including the gorgeous Jean Kelly, who sings while serving up her coconut French toast. There are five ludicrously beautiful beaches, where you can paddle board, splash around in kayaks or laze in a hammock watching hummingbirds before joining the lunchtime party at Deadman's Beach Bar & Grill.
